This summer has been a tragic time for Haiti. The country, the poorest in the Western hemisphere, was already suffering from the global food crisis. In August and September 2008, three consecutive hurricanes – Gustav, Hanna and Ike – devastated the island nation.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14, 1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. The agency is mandated to lead and co-ordinate international action to protect refugees and resolve refugee problems worldwide. Its primary purpose is to safeguard the rights and well-being of refugees.
The UN Foundation is an advocate for the UN and platform for connecting people, ideas and resources to help the UN solve global problems. The UN Foundation has since become the premier organization in helping the UN meet these challenges.
