 How to Allow Pop-up Windows from www.cdc.gov

You or your system administrator may have installed and turned on pop-up blocking software on your computer. While this software typically blocks unwanted pop-up advertisements, it can also block necessary content presented in pop-up windows. In the case of the NHANES web tutorial, it can block the animated demonstrations and viewing the Tutorial Variable list, animations, quiz and homework activities. When many pop-up blockers block a pop-up window,  they display a yellow bar with a message like "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options, click here ..." just below the Address field on your browser, as pictured below. This picture is from Microsoft Internet Explorer, but Yahoo and Google's pop-up blocking software are similar.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

To allow pop-ups through Internet Explorer's pop-up blocking feature, which came with Windows XP Service Pack 2:

1. Click the yellow bar with the message "Pop-up blocked. To see this pop-up or additional options, click here ..." that appeared on any of the NHANES tutorial pages. A context menu will appear. (See screen shot below.)
    

2. Select 'Always Allow Pop-ups from This Site.' A dialog box appears asking "Would you like to allow pop-ups from 'www.cdc.gov'?". (See screenshot below.)

3. Click the Yes button. The page then refreshes - it may appear as if the page 'blinked' - and the yellow bar disappears.

4. You can now click the link that was blocked earlier, and the pop-up window will open.

Mozilla Firefox

In initial tests, the Mozilla Firefox browser always allowed the tutorial's pop-up windows, regardless of settings. However, if your version of the browser blocks the tutorial pop-up windows, this is what you need to do to allow them.

1. Go to Tools→Options, and then click the Content tab.

2. Click the button labeled "Allowed Sites," next to the line labeled "Block Pop-up Windows."

3. Enter www.cdc.gov in the "Address of Web Site" field. (See screenshot below.)

4. Click the "Allow" button. (See screenshot below.)

5. Click the "Close" button to exit the dialog box. (See screenshot below.)

 

There are additional pop-up blocking software packages available and you may have more than one installed (e.g. XP's pop-up blocker and the Yahoo! Toolbar pop-up blocker). You will need to consult the software's Help section to get help allowing pop-ups from the NHANES web tutorial. Yahoo! Toolbar Pop-up blocker

You have the Yahoo! Toolbar installed if you see a large red Y! directly under your browser's Address field.

How to Allow Active Content

The NHANES web tutorial also uses scripting to make its contents interactive. This is content that Microsoft Internet Explorer may also be configured to block. When this content is blocked a yellow bar appears directly under the Address field in your browser. This is pictured below.

Microsoft Internet Explorer only

To allow this blocked content to run, click the yellow bar. A content menu appears. Click "Allow Blocked Content." A dialog pop appears saying Allowing active content like Active X controls and script can be useful, but active content might also harm to your computer. Are you sure you want to allow this file to run active content?" Click the Yes button. The dialog box disappears and the yellow bar disappears. You can now access the active content on this page.

 

 

How to install Macromedia Flash 8 player

Some of the content in the demonstrations, animations and especially the quizzes, may not appear correctly if you do not have Macromedia Flash 8 player installed. For example, the opening page of the quiz will appear as a mostly blank blue screen and the text identifying the quiz does not appear. To solve this, you will need the Macromedia Flash 8 player. Earlier versions will not work.

Speakers attached to the computer are not required to view the tutorial, but they are necessary to hear the audio narration on the optional demonstrations.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

It is available for free from Macromedia at http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOX. You may need a system administrator to install the software for you if you do not have administrative rights to your computer.

Mozilla Firefox

It is available for free from Macromedia at http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&promoid=BIOW. You may need a system administrator to install the software for you if you do not have administrative rights to your computer.

If, while using Mozilla Firefox, you attempt to open an animation that requires Flash player and you do not have it installed, you will see a screen like this:

You can click the "Install Missing Plug-ins" button in the yellow bar to automatically install the plug-in.

 

How to Make Text Larger

Microsoft Internet ExplorerExplorer

Go to View→Text Size→then select the "Larger" or "Largest" option from the pop-up menu.

 

Netscape Navigator

Go to View→Increase Font. Repeat until the type is size is to your liking.

 

Mozilla Firefox

Go to View→Text Size → Increase. Repeat until the type is size is to your liking.

 

How to Adjust Monitor Resolution

The tutorial was designed to fit width-wise on a 800 by 600 pixel screen without left-to-right scrolling. However, you will need to scroll vertically. The animations and pop-up windows were also designed to fit inside a  800 by 600 pixel screen without any scrolling. If you do not know your monitor's resolution, you may want to check it before beginning the tutorial.

To check your monitor's resolution on a computer running any version of Microsoft Windows:

• Right-click any open space on your computer's desktop to bring up a pop-up menu.
• Select Properties from the menu, and then select the Settings tab.
• Under the Settings tab, you should see a slider labeled Screen Resolution.

The numbers under the slider is your monitor's resolution. Common settings, from lowest to highest, are:

• 600 by 480 pixels
• 800 by 600 pixels (minimum for viewing tutorial)
• 1024 by 780 pixels (recommended)
• 1280 by 1024 pixels

800 by 600 pixels is the minimum to use the tutorial, and 1024 by 780 pixels is recommended.
