Bacterial Zoonoses Branch
The Bacterial Zoonoses Branch is responsible for the prevention and control of illnesses due to a varied group of zoonotic and environmental pathogens, and unexplained critical illness and deaths. We assist in control of epidemics and develop new methods to control and prevent bacterial zoonotic diseases (including anthrax, brucellosis, and leptospirosis) and mycobacterial infections other than tuberculosis (Hansen’s Disease and Buruli Ulcer). We also provide reference and diagnostic activities for agents causing these diseases and for the identification of unknown bacterial isolates associated with human and animal disease. With sensitivity to the cultural and economic values present surrounding animal and environmental issues, we develop, implement and evaluate prevention strategies for these diseases in collaboration with other domestic public health partners within and external to the agency at local, state, and federal levels; with international partners such as Ministers of Health, the World Health Organization (WHO), World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); and with private industry and other non-governmental organizations involved in public health.
As the agency experts on the epidemiology and pathogen characteristics of several identified bioterror threats and the diseases caused by them, Branch epidemiologists and laboratory scientists provide scientific input to the bioterrorism preparedness programs at CDC for anthrax (Bacillus anthracis), brucellosis (Brucella spp.), melioidosis (Burkholderia pseudomallei), and glanders (Burkholderia mallei).

Mission
The mission of the Bacterial Zoonoses Branch is to prevent illness, disability, or death caused by bacterial zoonotic diseases or unusual bacterial pathogens in the United States and around the world.
We accomplish our mission by conducting surveillance, epidemic investigations, epidemiologic and laboratory research, training, and public education to develop, evaluate, and promote prevention and control strategies for diseases due to bacterial zoonotic or unusual pathogens. Our staff works in partnership with local, state, private, and governmental human and animal health protection organizations.
