Florida International University
The new Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum
at Florida International University is the only major Miami museum that charges no
admission and serves the diverse community of South Florida by collecting works of art with particular
emphasis on Latin American and 20th century American art. On November 29, 2008 the new Frost Art
Museum opened to the public. Designed by Yann Weymouth, the 46,000 square-foot building
includes nine galleries and 10,000 square feet of gallery spaces.
“We now have a world class museum in this city that offers important exhibitions and art education
free to the public. We’re saying to our community, ‘this is your museum’,” said Carol Damian, director
and chief curator of the Frost. The Frost Art Museum has been a Smithsonian Affiliate since 2001,
and collaborated on programs and exhibitions with The Smithsonian Associates, Smithsonian American
Art Museum, Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and the Smithsonian Latino Center.
