Overview

The International Emerging Infections Program (IEIP) in Egypt began in 2006 as a collaboration between the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit No. 3 (NAMRU-3). IEIP-Egypt builds on existing partnerships between the MOHP and the U.S. Department of Defense’s Global Emerging Infection Surveillance and Response System (DOD-GEIS) at NAMRU-3 in Cairo. IEIP complements the Field Epidemiology Training Program in Egypt, which shares a mission to strengthen capacity to identify and control infectious diseases with epidemic potential. The program also works closely with the influenza activities at NAMRU3 and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the World Health Organization.

The IEIP program headquarters is based at Cairo’s Abbassia Fever Hospital which borders the NAMRU-3 campus. IEIP-Egypt utilizes population-based surveillance with laboratory confirmation to monitor the incidence of infectious diseases, detect outbreaks, and conduct epidemiologic research in several areas of the country. Associated training and integration of laboratory and epidemiology programs into larger, international networks are also building infectious disease prevention and control capacities for Egypt. These activities bilaterally enhance scientists’ understanding of the prevention, control, diagnosis, and treatment of pneumonia, diarrheal and febrile illnesses of public health significance in Egypt and surrounding Mediterranean and East Africa regions.
