SPEAKER: David Minor
EVENT DATE: 09/19/2007
RUNNING TIME: 43 minutes
DESCRIPTION:
Over the last twelve months, the Library of Congress has been conducting data transfer and storage tests with one of the world's largest supercomputing data centers, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). Project Manager David Minor recounts details of the project and lessons learned, and discusses implications for the future of digital storage and preservation.
Speaker Biography: David Minor is head of the Digital Preservation Initiatives Group at the San Diego Supercomputer Center, UC-San Diego. He received his BA in philosophy from Carleton College and his MLIS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has worked previously for libraries at the University of New Mexico, University of Wisconsin, and Penn State University. Minor's primary area of focus is making practical use of emerging computer technologies in the world of digital preservation. Specifically, his work examines how the tools and processes known collectively as "cyberinfrastructure" can be brought to bear in the rapidly growing field of digital data curation and preservation. This includes such things as grid-based computing, high speed networks and large-scale data replication.
