OpenEpi (www.OpenEpi.com)
is a project to create open source software for epidemiologic and
statistical calculations using JavaScript and HTML. OpenEpi operates like a
calculator, similar to Statcalc and EpiTable from the DOS version of Epi
Info, in that the user provides summary data and the program presents the
results of calculations. OpenEpi can be run from a web site or downloaded
and run without a web connection. It does not require a server or web site,
although it also runs on web servers. It should be compatible with recent
Linux, Mac, and PC browsers supporting JavaScript and HTML, regardless of
operating system.
OpenEpi provides statistics for:
- Analytic analyses for categorical data: 2x2 tables, stratified
2x2 tables, test for trend, including unique features such as exact
confidence intervals and p-values, etiologic and prevented fractions
- Analytic analyses for continuous
data: independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA)
- Screening and diagnostic tests:
sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and ROC curves
- Sample size and power
calculations: for proportions, cross-sectional studies, cohort studies,
randomized controlled clinical trials, unmatched case-control studies, and
for comparison of means
- Links to other sites, a
calculator, and random number generator
OpenEpi materials have an open source
license and can be downloaded, distributed, or translated. Some of the
component materials from other sources have licensing statements in the
source code files. Licenses referred to are available in full text at
