Photo 1: Bemis Heights today. [Photo 1] with link to larger version of photo.
(National Park Service)

The hills, fields, and ravines are empty today except for tourists, but during the battles for Saratoga in 1777, thousands of American and British soldiers were encamped in fortifications along the Hudson River.

Questions for Photo 1

1. What things missing today might you have seen in this portion of the American camp where the river fortifications were placed?

2. Looking at the terrain from Bemis Heights, why do you think the American army placed the American cannon and fortifications in this location?

* The photo on this screen has a resolution of 72 dots per inch (dpi), and therefore will print poorly. You can obtain a larger version of Photo 1, but be aware that the file will take as much as 30 seconds to load with a 28.8K modem.
