Waste Site Reports: Maryland
NOAA trust species in Maryland include anadromous and catadromous species such as alewife, blueback herring, American shad, American eel, striped bass, white perch, yellow perch, and the federally endangered shortnose sturgeon. NOAA trust resources also include several marine and estuarine species, as well as shellfish such as blue crab and eastern oyster. Most of these species are important both recreationally and commercially.
Military Sites in Maryland
The NOAA RRC program has contributed to the understanding of ecological problems and participated in the decision-making process for USA Aberdeen-Edgewood, USA Aberdeen-Michaelsville, and USN Patuxent Naval Air Station. The nature of defense-related activities involves chemicals that can be highly toxic and persistent in the environment. In Maryland, defense-related contaminants of concern include VOCs, PCBs, PAHs, heavy metals, pesticides, solvents, and special compounds such as explosives and components of chemical warfare agents. NOAA's input is needed to ensure cleanups that are protective of coastal natural resources as well as human health. NOAA offers technical expertise and a perspective valued by both EPA and the military.
Areas of Special Concern in Maryland
The NOAA RRC program works to protect and restore natural resources throughout Maryland. However, Chesapeake Bay is of special interest to NOAA because it supports diverse trust species and habitats and important commercial and recreational fisheries. The Bay's wetlands are especially important habitat for estuarine fish and shellfish. NOAA has joined many agencies along with the State of Maryland in long-term efforts to prevent further degradation of the Bay resulting from increased coastal populations and development. A number of sites are clustered around the Bay resulting in contamination of sediments and groundwater. NOAA's focus in the area is on controlling sources of contamination, remediating contaminated sediments where appropriate, and restoring habitats to productive use.
