Electric Arc Article Cleaning

Abstract
Los Alamos National Laboratory has developed an apparatus and method in which surface contaminants on electrically conductive articles are removed by negatively charging the article in proximity to a positively charged anode in the presence of a purging gas. The apparatus and method is particularly suited for cleaning elongated, longitudinally symmetrical articles such as wire or small diameter tubes which can be moved with respect to the anode in a continuous process.

Application(s)
Any industry requiring removal of contamination from conductive surfaces

  • Wire
  • Tubing
  • Welding
  • Semiconductor & electronics

Advantages

  • Eliminates the need for chemical solvents
  • Operates at atmospheric pressure eliminating the need for vacuum environments
  • Process can be easily integrated into applicable end item manufacturing processes
