Plasma Torch Generation Of Spherical Nano Oxide Particles

Abstract
University of California scientists have developed a continuous plasma-based method of creating uniform nanosized (5-50nm) metal particles from microscale precursors. The low power, microwave atmospheric plasma torch exhibits a single torch production rate of 400mg/hr at 500W and demonstrates predictable and controllable modification of micron scale precursors aerosols of nearly all metals. This method generates minimal waste and is cost-effective as precursors are inexpensive.

Application(s)
Will be useful in markets requiring production of nanostructured metals including;

  • Automotive catalyst supports
  • Bio-diagnostics and other sensors
  • Chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries
  • Magnetic recording tapes
  • Optical fibers
  • Sunscreens
  • Drug delivery agents
  • Quantum optical devices
  • Environmental remediation
  • Ceramics
  • Semiconductors
