Student Work and Internships

There are three options for student employment in the National Weather Service: Student Volunteer Position, Student Temporary Experience Program (STEP) position, and the Student Career Education Program (SCEP) position. The STEP and SCEP positions are highly competitive. The volunteer position, however, can be filled at any time (usually during the summer). In all cases, prior to your participation, the NWS enters into an agreement with your school in regards to our joint commitment to the respective programs.

The Student Volunteer Position

The Student Volunteer Position is an unpaid position, for a term of up to 180 days. While in this position, you can study in any area, including meteorology, hydrology or computer/electronic systems. The position is typically open to college students only, although exceptions can be made for high school seniors with a strong interest in the NWS. Such a position could be established at the Green Bay NWS station at any time - a simple application procedure is required.

The Student Temporary Experience Program

The STEP position is a paid position for a term of up to one year, though it could be extended beyond that. While in this position, you can study in any area, and not be limited to meteorology, hydrology or computer/electronic systems (although one of these areas is preferred if the STEP position is eventually converted to a SCEP position). An application along with a description of your reasons for wishing to work for the NWS and your expected benefits from the experience are required. Selection to a STEP position is competitive.

The Student Career Education Program

The SCEP position is also a paid position, but for a term of a few years (during your education) in the areas of either meteorology, hydrology or computer/electronic systems. You would have to be selected by our station for such a position. (You can convert to the SCEP position from a STEP position.) An application along with a description of your reasons for wishing to work for the NWS and your expected benefits from the experience are required. Selection to a SCEP position is competitive. After completing your degree requirements, completing a minimum number of work hours in a SCEP position, and demonstrating high-quality performance in that position, you would be eligible for conversion to a permanent NWS position, if such a position were to become available.
