WASHINGTON, DC - For her support of cooperative business, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (Manhattan and Queens) today received a National Cooperative Business Association Honored Cooperative Award. The award was given to recognize Maloney’s long-time work on behalf of businesses owned and democratically controlled by their members, rather than outside businesses.
The presidents of the National Cooperative Bank and Credit Union National Association were among those on Capitol Hill to honor Maloney. “Cooperative businesses are a perfect union of democratic and business principles,” said Maloney. “They are an important part of our economy and community, and I am proud to be a strong advocate for them here in Washington. It’s an honor to be recognized.” Charles M. Snyder, President and CEO of the National Cooperative Bank praised Maloney’s “unswerving dedication to cooperatives.” Daniel A. Mica, President of the Credit Union National Association said she has been “a good friend to credit unions, one who truly understands what makes us unique as member-owned, not-for-profit cooperatives.” In Congress, Maloney has been a strong backer of legislation giving veterans the right to use VA loans to purchase co-op housing units. She also has supported legislation to ease regulation of credit unions and to provide funding for worker-owned cooperatives and other employee-owned businesses. Credit unions and housing cooperatives are some of the most frequent examples of cooperative businesses. Making the presentation in addition to NCBA, CUNA and the National Cooperative Bank were the Council of New York Cooperatives & Condominiums, the Federation of New York Housing Cooperatives, the National Association of Federal Credit Unions, the National Association of Housing Cooperatives, the New York State Credit Union League and Amalgamated Bank. ### |
