Evaluation Monitoring
The Evaluation Monitoring component of the Forest Health Monitoring program is designed to determine
the extent, severity, and causes of undesirable changes in forest health identified through
Detection Monitoring and other means. The need for EM projects arises when significant forest health changes or trends are
found in Detection Monitoring. Evaluation Monitoring also provides additional information about forest health improvements such
as improved plant vigor resulting from air pollution abatement.
In FY 2005, Region 5 received $274,000 from the WO for Evaluation Monitoring projects for 5 projects:
- Intensified Ozone Monitoring and Assessment
of Ozone Impacts on Conifers in Southern California, Michael Arbaugh & Andrzej Bytnerowicz, PSWRS
- An Assessment of White Pine Blister Rust on
High Elevation White Pines in California, Joan Dunlap, John Kliejunas, R5 FHP
- Determination of the incidence and impacts of
Phytophthora ramorum in coastal forests of California, David Rizzo, UC Davis
- Southern California Forest Health
Assessment, FIA plot remeasurement, Ralph Warbington
- Assessment of Insects and Pathogens Associated
with Declining Dry Forest Ecosystems in Hawaii, John Wenz, FHP Stanislaus NF
