WHAT IS INFORMAL EDUCATION?
In our fast-changing world, people of all ages continue to seek knowledge and enrich their lives beyond the formal education process of the classroom. NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) seek to enhance the capabilities of the informal education community to inspire the next generation of explorers by providing access to NASA staff, research, technology, information, and/or facilities; providing professional development opportunities for informal science educators; and facilitating formation of collaborative partnerships among informal and formal education communities. The informal education community includes, for example, amateur astronomy groups, after-school programs, libraries, museums, science centers, planetaria, zoos, aquaria, youth groups, and service clubs.

RESOURCES
Space exploration often begins with a launch! After that, there are quick flybys of other planets, longer-term observations of Earth and other solar system bodies, and sometimes landings. Keep up to date by checking several mission event calendarsand then check out calendars for our Museum Alliance and our Solar System Ambassadors to see if any museums or NASA Solar System Ambassadors are hosting events near you.

PUBLIC TOURS
The JPL Public Services Office offers tours free of charge for groups and individuals on an advance reservation basis. You must speak with a Public Services Office representative in order to reserve a tour. Reservations may not be made via e-mail, voice mail or fax.

PUBLIC EVENTS
In addition to various mission-related special events, the Public Services Office also conducts regular events for the public: the Theodore von Kármán Lecture Series and the annual JPL Open House.

TRAVELING EXHIBITS
NASA exhibits provide information on the Agency's activities as well as an opportunity for people to interact and learn about and experience NASA programs in a tangible way. NASA Visitor Centers and portable exhibits are visited by over 40 million people each year.
