A sea-bed lander being deployed off the Norfolk coast by OETG staff.

The Ocean Engineering and Technology Group (OETG), and Tide Gauge Inspectorate (TGI), work very closely together to provide POL with the data it needs to serve the scientific community and society at large.

The OETG designs, builds and uses instruments which record physical data anywhere from the surface to depths of about 6km.

The TGI maintains 44 tide gauges round the coasts of the UK and operates under a contract with the Environment Agency. Tidal data are used to provide flood-protection warnings (e.g. for the operation of the Thames Barrier) and information on sea level rise.

The picture to the right shows a seabed lander being deployed off the Norfolk coast by OETG staff.

The OETG is divided into three groups:

  • The Mechanical Engineering group
The Mechanical Engineering group designs, makes and builds the structures which support and protect instruments in the sea and around our coasts.

  • The Remote Sea Level group
The Remote Sea Level group measures tides in the deeper parts of the Atlantic Ocean, and around South Atlantic Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • The Coastal and Sediments group
The Coastal and Sediments group records currents, temperatures and sediment information on the Continental Shelf and in coastal seas. This group supports the POL Coastal Observatory and Ferrybox projects especially.
