In October 2006, the Department of Health and Human Services announced they would be developing an evidence-based set of physical activity recommendations for Americans. The first phase of this project was forming a Federal Advisory Committee whose task was to review and combine the scientific literature about the health benefits of physical activity. The comprehensive report of the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee is now available. This report summarizes the most up-to-date scientific information about physical activity and health, including information on special populations such as children, older adults, adults with chronic conditions, and people with disabilities. An entire chapter is devoted to musculoskeletal health, including the benefits of physical activity for adults with arthritis and other bone and joint problems. This report will be the basis for the developing the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans which is scheduled to be released in October 2008.
