WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Census Bureau Director Ken Prewitt, Congressional Census Subcommittee Chairman Dan Miller (R-FL), and Census Subcommittee Ranking-Chair Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) visited a local census office in Alexandria, Virginia.

"It is impossible to get a true feel of the complexity of the Census and the hard work and dedication of Bureau employees form the halls of Congress. Visiting local census offices, as the subcommittee staff had done around the nation, is the best way to get a true understanding of the fine work being down by Bureau employees," said Dam Miller, Chairman, Subcommittee on the Census. "I hope the Subcommittee will continue to work with the Bureau in future visits so that we may better understand Census 2000 operations. I was very impressed by what I saw here today."

"I am pleased with what I've seen here today. In visiting this local census office, we get a chance to see how the Census operation is working from the ground up," Maloney said. "The 2000 Census will be the largest peacetime mobilization in our nation's history. I was very impressed with the professionalism of the employees, and their energy and enthusiasm."
