Statement by Census Committee Ranking Member Maloney on Census Printing Error

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Congressional Census Subcommittee Ranking Member Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement:

"I have been briefed by Census Bureau Director Kenneth Prewitt on the printing error in the addresses on the advance notification letter. I am pleased to learn that the United States Postal Service feels confident that they will be able to deliver this mailing in full and on time, in spite of the misprint. I commend the USPS for its fast and helpful response to this problem.

"The Census Bureau sends an advance notification letter with the hopes of raising public awareness that the Census is coming, and oddly enough, this error may help do just that! I continue to enthusiastically urge all Americans to participate in the Census. Every Census Bureau hiring program, advertising plan, and mailing is on target for the 2000 Census. With just weeks until Census Day, I am positive that with the help and participation of all Americans, the 2000 Census will be a success for all our cities and communities."
