MALONEY STATEMENT ON PRESS REPORT THAT BUSH ADMINISTRATION HAS DECIDED NOT TO EVEN TRY TO CORRECT 2010 CENSUS

Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), the former Ranking Member of the Census Subcommittee released the following statement in response to news reports that the Bush Administration's Census Bureau has already decided it will not even try to correct the 2010 Census:

"The Census Bureau used to evaluate one census to learn how to make the next census more accurate. Now it seems that the Bush Administration is trying to cement plans for the 2010 census without completing the evaluations of the 2000 census, and for reasons of political expediency, has thrown in the towel on making the 2010 census more accurate than its predecessors.

"Mr. Kincannon, President Bush's Census Bureau Director, after only a few weeks on the job, is happy to begin planning for a census that leaves some people out of the count, and counts others twice to make up for it. That may be good politics, but it is lousy science, and the American public deserves better than that from its public servants.
