Administration Slashes Homeland Security Funding for New York
Despite Bush Administration’s Promise of Risk-Based Homeland Security Funding, $114M Less for NY in Latest Round; Distribution shows “incompetence,” says Rep. Maloney
WASHINGTON, DC – The Department of Homeland Security finally announced the distribution of FY06 grants for local first responders today, and shockingly, New York City will take a cut of $83 million and New York state will take a cut of $114.67 million. Despite promises from Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff earlier this year that his department would be distributing money based on risk, the state most at risk for terrorist attacks will receive a cut of about 40% compared to last year.

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (NY-14), Chair of the House Democratic Task Force on Homeland Security, today expressed outrage at the security funding distribution.

“This administration’s approach to homeland security can be summed up in one word: incompetence,” said Maloney. “Earlier this year they were promising smarter funding. It goes to show you that you can’t trust this administration to get anything right.

“What competent person would possibly think that slashing security funding for the nation’s top terrorist target is a smart idea? Knowing this administration, I expect the president to tell Secretary Chertoff, ‘Heckuva job, Mikey.’”

In grants to states, New York will receive an estimated $2.78 per person, while Wyoming will receive $14.83.

Meanwhile, in Urban Area Security Initiative grants, which are meant for localities most at risk, New York faces an $83 million cut, while localities including Omaha, Louisville and Jacksonville will receive increases.
