This map of the mid-latitude region of Mars shows concentrations of the element iron. (Yellow and green represent higher concentrations than blue.) Iron, with the chemical symbol Fe, is among the most abundant elements on the surface of both Mars and Earth. It is responsible for the red color on the surface of Mars.
The map, based on data from Mars Odyssey, shows the locations of NASA's five successful lander missions: Viking 1 (VL1), Viking 2 (VL2), Pathfinder (PF), Spirit at Gusev (G), and Opportunity at Meridiani (M).
