Delaware Team Wins National Envirothon competition

Charter School of Wilmington recently became the first Delaware school to win the Canon EnvirothonCharter School of Wilmington's five-student team recently toughed out an action-packed week of nature competition to win the Canon Envirothon national championship. The Charter School team (three of whom are seen in photo alongside during the state Envirothon competition) eclipsed high school students from 45 states and nine Canadian provinces to capture their crown in North America's largest environmental education contest, held this year at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. The Canon Envirothon tests teams on their knowledge of soils and land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and a current environmental issue - this year's issue being Recreational Impacts on Natural Resources. The Thank You Delaware Bay campaign was developed to showcase the beauty and amenities of the Delaware Bay and to encourage actions and activities that will help protect the bay's health and resources. The TYDB campaign sprang from a collaboration of DNREC's Division of Soil and Water Conservation, Delaware Coastal Programs, The Nature Conservancy, and the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary.


New signs advise the public to protect and respect the fragility of Delaware's dunes.The Division's Shoreline and Waterways Management Section has partnered with the Delaware Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation to educate the public about protecting and respecting Delaware’s sand dunes with new signs that urge: “Respect Your Beach – Please Stay Off the Dunes.” The first of these signs have been placed at Herring Point in Cape Henlopen State Park, notable both for its popularity as a surf spot and for having spectacular sand dunes.
