Lao authorities have begun the difficult task of assessing the damages caused by recent floods in various provinces throughout the nation, and found that the capital city of Vientiane suffered the most, with damages over 200 billion kips.

Initial assessments indicate that damages in six of the 9 flooded districts surpass 228 billion kips. Officials are currently assessing damages in Saythani and Sikhottabong districts.

Damages in the province of Luang Prabang are initially assessed to be more than 100 billion kips. with half in the destruction of infrastructures and the other half inthe loss of farmlands.

In central Laos, over 17,000 hectares of rice fields were destroyed in the provinces of Khammouane and Bolikhamsay, in addition to damages worth over 200 billion kips to irrigation systems and roads, especially Route 13 South.

Officials fear the worst may not be over yet for the southern part of the country, if heavy rainfalls continue, causing more water to flow down south and inundate more parts of the southern provinces.
