Winter Energy Savings from Lower Thermostat Settings
Data from the Residential Energy Consumption Survey 1997 and projections from the Short-Term Energy Outlook December 2000 were used to estimate average dollar savings by households if they lowered their thermostats by 1 degree Fahrenheit during the 2000-2001 winter heating season. Those households may realize average savings of $15 to $40 or more, relative to annual heating bills that total a few hundred dollars to a thousand dollars or more.

Residential Natural Gas Prices: What Consumers Should Know
This brochure is intended to answer qustions about the factors that have contributed to the rise in natural gas prices and addresses concerns that consumers may have about the current heating season. Note: Natural gas consumption and expenditure estimates in Table 1 in the brochure are only for space heating in households, while the consumption and expenditure estimates in “Natural Gas Use in American Households” are for all natural gas end uses.
