Special thanks to all our funders, supporters, and friends for your continued dedication and assistance in helping Hoop Dreams "Empower the Pursuit of Dreams." Check out our highlights from our 10th Anniversary Gala in 2007. Thank you to the team at Gearshift Productions for their fantastic editing and video production!

Unlike traditional mentorship, our Empowerment Program benefits both student and adult. During the beginning of each school year we pair about 80 teenagers with college-educated mentors. These adults help guide them through the sometimes overwhelming college application process.

"Every generation inherits a world it never made,
and as it does so, it automatically becomes the trustee for those who come after."
- Robert F. Kennedy

During this Holiday Season we would like to thank you for your support during 2008. As we prepare to enter a New Year and continue our work with students from Washington, D.C. public high schools, please consider continuing your commitment to academic excellence and career opportunities! Click here to make a difference.

Are we about basketball? No.
Are we about sport scholarships? Nope
What ARE we about? We are about DREAMS.

Real dreams. Dreams of a better education, an enriched life, and a stronger community. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund (HDSF) recognized a need to ensure students, who have worked hard amidst social, economic, and racial disparities, get the opportunity to excel in college and in the workforce. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund works to create relationships, build networks and provide resources that:

bullet

empower and support underserved DC public high school students and HDSF alumni to find their best pathways to post-secondary education, a career and an enriched life;

bullet

build bridges of understanding and collaboration between diverse communities in the metropolitan Washington DC region; and

bullet

promote an on-going commitment to community responsibility and a lasting spirit among students, volunteers, supporters, and all involved.

Since 1996, HDSF has helped nearly 1,000 students to college through the combination of our year-long college & career prep programs and the awarding of over 1,805 new and renewal academic college scholarships. HDSF works to empower DC public high school youth, so they can find their best pathways to college, career, and life success. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund offers students a unique opportunity to develop relationships with local professionals, receive academic scholarships, build networks, and access resources that will help enrich lives. Most of these students are the first in their family to attend college and come from very challenging social and economic circumstances. But more than "getting kids into college" - HDSF prepares students for life. Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund is about Building Bridges of Success while Empowering the Pursuit of Dreams.

fashion forward.

HDSF would like to thank all of our friends, supporters, sponsors and volunteers who helped make the charity Fashion Forward event, which was presented by Absolute Addiction and iKY Clothing, a success. On Friday, November 21, 2008 more than 300 people packed Shadow Room for Fashion Forward. The event, which was sponsored by EES, Strauss Radio Strategies, Inc., and Greater Washington Fashion Chamber of Commerce, helped to raise money to support HDSF's Empowerment Program. Click here to watch HDSF on Channel 9.

Former US Congressman C. Thomas McMillen (center) joined Susie Kay and the HDSF staff at the Fashion Forward event presented by Absolute Addiction and IKY Clothing on Friday, November 21st. Click here for additional photos of fashion Forward.

Senator John Kerry at the 8th Annual Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund Congressional Reception on May 11th in The United States Capitol Building.

HDSF would like to congratulate our friend and supporter Mr. Ebong Eka for the successful launch of his new fashion clothing line, Mi Chiamo Eka. On August 25, 2008, Mi Chiamo Eka made its fashion debut on the runway at K Street Lounge. A portion of the proceeds from Mr. Eka's clothing launch fundraiser benefited HDSF. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported our dear friend Ebong and his new line!. And thank you for supporting the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund.

The work HDSF does with our students does not end after they graduate from high school. We continue to remain a presence in the lives of our students as they enter college, the workforce and beyond.
