WEINER RECORD ON WORKING FAMILIES RECEIVES PERFECT SCORE

New York City – In a newly released Legislative Scorecard for the 109th Congress by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn) has received a perfect score for his support on issues of importance to working families. This year’s scorecard is based on votes cast on immigration reform, voting rights, tax cuts, the budget, education, bankruptcy reform and disaster relief for Hurricane Katrina survivors.

The organization gave Weiner its highest ranking for consistently protecting the needs of the low-and-moderate income communities that comprises its membership. Weiner voted to increase K-12 education funding, provide emergency health care and hotel vouchers for Katrina survivors and to create a uniform legalization program for immigrants while opposing the GOP bankruptcy bill, the repeal of the estate tax, the denial of language assistance to voters and the enforcement only anti-immigration Sensenbrenner bill.

The Scorecard’s key purpose is to ensure ACORN members, ally organizations and voters are fully informed about the performance of federal legislators on issues of importance to working families, and more importantly, that Members of Congress are held accountable for their voting records.

“New York City’s middle class and those striving to get there are feeling the squeeze from stagnant wages, increasing health insurance premiums and the lack of affordable housing,” said Rep. Weiner. “I pledge to continue fighting for New York’s working families that are the backbone of our great city.”

ACORN, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities. Since 1970, ACORN has grown to more than 220,000 member families, organized in 850 neighborhood chapters in over 100 cities across the U.S. and in cities in Canada, the Dominican Republic and Peru.
