WEINER RESPONDS TO FAA ANNOUNCEMENT OF EAST RIVER FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS

New York City - Today, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens) responded to the FAA's decision to restrict low flying fixed-wing aircraft over the East River until further notice:

"Restricting fixed-wing aircraft only gets us 5% of the way toward safer and more secure airspace around New York City. Helicopters and seaplanes, which account for 95% of traffic in the East River corridor, will still be allowed to roam freely at the lowest altitudes.

“Restrictions must apply to all aircraft. It's not just a matter of safety for pilots and passengers, but also of security for citizens on the ground.”

Yesterday, Weiner called on the FAA to restrict small planes and helicopters from flying in low airspace around New York City until a complete safety and security assessment of New York City airspace is completed. He also reiterated a call he first made more than two years ago to prohibit helicopters from flying over Manhattan.
