GOP CONVENTION PRIMER—TRANSPORTATION: BUSH PROPOSES $119 BILLION CUT TO TRANSPORTATION PROGRAMS

PILOT PROGRAM PROPOSED FOR THREE G-LINE TRANSFER POINTS

Brooklyn, NY - Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Queens & Brooklyn), a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, is urging the MTA to implement a six month trial program of providing free street transfers to G-Line passengers.

The G-Line is the MTA’s only subway line that serves Queens and Brooklyn exclusively. That’s great for local commuting, but passengers seeking access to Manhattan or other points in the 5 boroughs have to exit the G-Line and walk a few blocks to nearby stations servicing other lines.

That’s where things can get expensive: passengers end up paying two fares for what should be considered one ride.

So Weiner is calling on Chair of the Metropolitan Transit Authority Peter Kalikow to implement free street transfers for a six month trial period between the following stations:

* Hoyt-Schermerhorn station and Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street, Nevins Street and the Hoyt Street stations.

* Fulton Street station and the Lafayette Avenue and the Atlantic Avenue/Pacific Street stations.

* Broadway station and the Hewes Street station.

“Street transfers provide a way to link subway lines without capital investment,” wrote Weiner in a letter to Kalikow. “A G line street transfer program would increase rider ship and convenience on the G without negatively impacting the MTA’s capital or operating budget. Transfers would give straphangers more routing options and decrease traffic at the City’s most congested transfer stations.”
