WEINER CALLS FOR FEDERAL INVESTIGATION INTO DISRUPTIVE CONCORDE FLIGHT
ROCKAWAY RESIDENTS HAVE SUFFERED ENOUGH, WEINER SAYS
Queens, NY - Rep. Anthony Weiner (D - Queens & Brooklyn) has called for a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) investigation into the flight of a Concorde jet that rocked Belle Harbor earlier this month, and has renewed his push for the installation of noise monitors along the Rockaway Peninsula by the New York Port Authority (PA).
On the morning of Sunday, July 21, a Concorde jet departing from JFK International Airport flew across the Rockaway Peninsula, waking many Belle Harbor residents, and setting off numerous car alarms. According to eyewitnesses, the jet struggled across the peninsula at a dangerously low altitude.
In a letter to the FAA, Rep. Weiner urged Administrator Garvey to initiate an investigation to ensure that the unusually low and disruptive flight was not the result of mechanical or other factors that could endanger Rockaway residents or jet passengers. In a companion letter to PA Aviation Department Director William DeCota, Rep. Weiner continued his push for the installation of noise monitors in the Rockaways to prevent residents from being subjected to unreasonable airplane noise, and to hold accountable those who violate flight restrictions.
"The residents of Belle Harbor, Queens, have suffered greatly since November 21, 2001 when American Airlines flight 587 crashed into their neighborhood," wrote Rep. Weiner. "Every time a plane flies overhead, residents look up in terror. No aircraft brings greater fear than the Concorde, the loudest commercial aircraft in operation today."
