AMERICAN WORLD WAR II HEROS TO RECEIVE LONG AWAITED HONORS

REP. WEINER TO AWARD BROOKLYN, QUEENS VETS FOR COURAGEOUS SERVICE

Brooklyn, NY On June 6, 1944, American troops stormed the coast of Normandy, and won the most pitched and pivotal battle of World War II. Under brutal conditions, thousands of Americans were wounded or lost their lives. Now, Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens) is working to ensure that these hallowed veterans are finally getting the honors they deserve.

In 1994, the Norman government awarded the Jubilee Medal of Freedom to veterans of the invasion, in recognition of their brave service. The problem: medals were awarded in Normandy, France, and many deserving veterans were unable to go.

Now, Rep. Weiner is making sure that these veterans receive full honors, eight years after the initial ceremony, and 58 years after risking all for American freedom. On May 27th, at a ceremony in the Gateway National Park, in Brooklyn, he will award Jubilee Medals of Freedom to hundreds of Brooklyn and Queens veterans of the Normandy invasion.

"The veterans of the Normandy invasion beat back the forces of tyranny, and secured freedom for America and the world," said Rep. Weiner. "They are true American heroes, and I am honored to recognize their great sacrifice and courage."

Any 9th Congressional District veteran of the Normandy invasion who would like to receive a Jubilee Medal of Liberty, is asked to contact Rep. Weiner’s District office at 718-332-9001. Veterans from the following neighborhoods are eligible to receive a Jubilee Medal of Liberty: Belle Harbor, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Corona, Elmhurst, Forest Hills, Gerritsen Beach, Glendale, Howard Beach, Kew Gardens, Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, Marine Park , Middle Village, Midwood, Mill Basin, Ozone Park, Park Slope, Rego Park, Rockaway Park, and Woodhaven The deadline for submission of the applications to receive a medal is April 26, 2002. The ceremony is cosponsored by the Kings and Queens County Jewish War Veterans of the United States of America and CitiGroup.
