WEINER APPEALS TO CITY FOR HELP SAVING LUNDY’S RESTAURANT

Sheepshead Bay, NY – Today, Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn & Queens) asked the City to renew financial ties with Tam Restaurant, Inc., the financially troubled owner of Lundy’s Restaurant in Sheepshead Bay. Tam has been unable to operate one of its other restaurants, American Park, because of a licensing dispute with the City Parks Department, further decreasing revenues and threatening the closure of Lundy’s.

Lundy’s Restaurant has been a Sheepshead Bay institution for over 75 years. But like many businesses, after 9/11 its mother company, Tam Restaurant Inc., took a significant hit, and filed for bankruptcy. As a result, the future of Lundy’s is in doubt.

For the past two years, Rep. Weiner has been trying to find a way for Tam, and by extension, Lundy’s, to climb out of its financial hole and stay in business. As the latest step in that process, today Weiner appealed to the City Department of Parks and Recreation to renew its licensing agreement with Tam that allows it to operate another restaurant, American Park, on Parks’ property. The Parks Department allowed its agreement with Tam to lapse because of Tam’s financial difficulties, cutting revenues, and putting Lundy’s at an even greater risk of closure.

“As you know, Tam Restaurant Corporation was burdened by extreme financial hardship in the aftermath of the World Trade Center attacks,” wrote Weiner in his letter to Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. “Their good faith effort to provide a service to the people and the City of New York demands the City’s fair treatment as Tam applies to reinstate its license. I urge you to consider Tam’s desire to run a business that embraces New York’s spirit of resilience.”
