NEWS: WEINER: "LOSS OF PARISH SCHOOLS IS A BODY BLOW TO OUR COMMUNITIES"

New York City – Representative Anthony Weiner (D - Queens and Brooklyn), who in 2005 led a summit of parents, business leaders and church officials to find a solution to keep Catholic schools open, released the following statement in response to yesterday's announcement of the New York Archdiocese’s recommendation to close 14 Catholic schools:

“The loss of parish schools is a body blow to our communities. The Diocese of Brooklyn faces substantial financial challenges in operating these schools, but simply shutting them down is lamentable to the families of Catholic school students.

“Losing these schools is a crisis not only for the families of students, but for students in our already overcrowded public schools as well. We’ll keep fighting to do everything we can to save the rest of them. We have to find a better solution than wholesale school closures.”
