NEWS: WEINER URGES QUEENS RESIDENTS TO GET FLU SHOTS

New York City – Representative Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn and Queens), today urged Queens residents to get flu vaccinations, after the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recent announcement that the commonly used anti-viral drug Tamiflu is ineffective against 99% of all flu strains this season.

Rep. Weiner said, “Catching the flu and suffering through fever, coughing, and a sore throat can be a miserable experience that can be easily avoided. The early Tamiflu warning means that taking a five-second flu shot, particularly for seniors and young children, will not only help prevent this suffering, but it will also help save lives.”

According to the CDC, patient flu samples resistant to Tamiflu spiked to 99% this year, compared to last winter’s 11%. The flu causes approximately 36,000 deaths annually, most of them elderly, young, or people with chronic illnesses.

Rep. Weiner emphasized that the best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated and encouraged residents to call his community office (718) 520-9001 to locate their nearest Queens clinic.
