About Medical Surveillance And Certification Examinations
The goal of the medical surveillance and certification examination program is to maintain a safe and healthy workforce.

Medical Surveillance Examinations are performed, according to regulatory guidance and NASA policy, for employees exposed to specific substances in the workplace. These examinations evaluate potential health effects related to these exposures and allow for early resolution of work related health and safety concerns.

Medical Certification Examinations ensure that employees are medically qualified to perform certain jobs, work in areas with specific exposures, and are able to properly and safely use personal protective equipment.

Physical Exam Matrix G

The NASA Medical Surveillance Matrix provides the minimum requirements that must be met when performing examinations related to specific potentially hazardous exposures, hazardous environments or workplace, job certification, flight activities, special purpose administrative, and voluntary health maintenance. It also provides references to the Federal Standards and other guidance documents related to these examinations. This Matrix will be updated to reflect regulatory changes and current occupational medicine practice. Refer to NPR 1800.1 B NASA Occupational Health Program Procedures, Chapter 2.9 for additional physical examination requirements.
