The Environmental Pain of Pleasure Boating Scott Fields Abstract Recreational boating in the United States is booming in popularity, and the quickly growing number of marine vehicles is causing increasing environmental problems. Boating creates air pollution and dumps potentially toxic chemicals, including petroleum compounds, cleaning and antifouling products, and human waste, into waterways. Watercraft and the noise they produce can also injure sea animals and damage fragile ecosystems. State and federal programs and regulations are being developed to support clean boating practices and make boats less polluting.
