resorts offer cabin rentals to vacationers. For more information on locations
and cost, consult the area chamber of commerce www.casslake.com
Leases
Recreation residences are privately owned, non-commercial cabins and structures
built on National Forest System land under authority of a special use permit.
They are maintained by and for the private use of an individual or family. Lots
are appraised every 20 years and the appraisal is the basis for annual fees
paid by the permit holders to the United States government for use of National
Forest land. Recreation residences are also taxed by the State of Minnesota
for the value of improvements and the value of the long-term lease rights.
Approximately 286 lake lots in the Chippewa National Forest are currently under
special use permit and no new permits are generated. Private owners may sell
their structures through the local real estate market. New owners assume responsibility
for the land use permit and annual fees.
