Passes and Permits

There are many types of authorizations, passes, or permits that an individual may be required to have when using national forest lands. The national forests provide for a variety of resources and activities that the public is interested in for personal or commercial purposes. Fees may be charged and permits are required for some activities and locations, such as camping.

Business permittees, such as campground concessionaires that provide services to public land users, are required to have a special use permit.

Commercial recreation activities (for example: fishing tournaments, rental of boats,outfitter guides, trail rides, etc.) are also required to have a permit.

Passes and permits are available for purchase at most Forest Service office locations.

Federal Recreation Passes

Many campgrounds, boat ramps, shooting ranges, and other developed recreation facilities on the Daniel Boone National Forest require a fee for public use to help cover costs for the facilities and services that are provided. Recreation Permits

If you plan to use a specialized facility (camping, parking, boat launch, ramps, swimming site, etc.) in the forest, you may have to pay a recreation fee.

Special Forest Products

Permits may be required for collecting natural resources such as moss, ginseng, Christmas trees, and other forest products. You MUST contact the Forest Service for specific information and permit requirements prior to any collecting.

Firewood Permit

If you want to cut firewood in the Daniel Boone National Forest, you will need to purchase a permit.

Special Use Permits

Permits are required to use national forests lands for commercial gain or when an impact may occur on the forest, such as commercial filming, outfitting and guides, river permits, wilderness permits, etc.

Concessionaires

A concessionaire is a private company that is contracted by the Forest Service to manage recreation facilities, such as campgrounds.
