Rep. Maloney Becomes Chair of Financial Institutions Subcommittee |
Powerful subcommittee oversees America’s banks |
WASHINGTON, DC – Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan, Queens), a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee, yesterday assumed the chairwomanship of the powerful Financial Institutions Subcommittee. The subcommittee oversees the American banking industry, which includes more than 22,000 banks, thrifts, and credit unions.
Maloney has served on the Financial Services Committee since she was first sworn in to Congress in 1992. She was the senior Democrat on the Domestic and International Monetary Policy, Trade and Technology Subcommittee during the last session of Congress.
“I am thrilled and honored to get the gavel for this vital subcommittee,” said Maloney. “As a New Yorker who represents much of the financial heart of the country, this subcommittee is a natural fit.
“Many of America’s preeminent financial institutions are my constituents, and I will work to maintain the safety and soundness of our banking system, both for the banks and their customers. I will take a balanced approach and will keep an open mind to all sides of an issue. I look forward to working in the best interests of our banking system with Chairman Frank and the other members of our historically congenial committee.”
