Subject: Participation in Adult Education and Lifelong Learning: 2000-01

This is the first full report, released by NCES, using data from the Adult
Education and Lifelong Learning Survey of the 2001 National Household
Education Survey Programs (AELL-NHES:2001) on the educational activities of
adults in the United States. The report shows that 46 percent of adults in
the United States participated in some type of formal education between
early 2000 and early 2001. Apart from looking at overall participation in
formal educational activities, major topics addressed in the report include
participation in various types of formal educational activities;
characteristics of participating adults; educational experiences in college
or university degree programs on a part-time basis, work-related courses,
and personal interest courses; reasons for participation in work-related
courses; characteristics of participants who received employer support; and
characteristics of participants in work-related informal learning
activities. To download, view and print the report as a pdf file, please
