For Immediate Release

James A. Gregson, Director of the Division of Adult, Counselor, and
Technology Education, University of Idaho and Peg Rooney, Dean of the
Center for Learning Outreach, Community College of Denver, will present
"Clarifying the Goals for Career and Technical Education" during a live
Webcast on Friday, December 3 at 3 p.m. EST.

You can view the webcast from any computer with Internet access at:

<http://www.nccte.org/webcasts/description.asp?wc=162>. If you cannot view
the webcast live, you can view the archived webcast on the National
Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education Web site at
<www.nccte.org>.

Gregson's presentation will reference research contending that a key
characteristic of a profession is a set of philosophical beliefs (e.g.,
Gray & Herr, 1998: Miller 1985). It is from such a set of philosophical
beliefs that congruent theory and practice can emerge for the field of
career and technical education. However, career and technical education
exists in very different contexts (e.g., middle school, short term training
at technical institutes), for very different populations (e.g., youth,
nontraditional adults), and with very different reasons (e.g.,
contextualized academic education, highly specialized technical training).
In Gregson's presentation, philosophies will be examined that have helped
to inform theory and practice in varied contexts.

Rooney will focus on the "Seven Magnificent Strategies" used by Community
College of Denver to reach disadvantaged and minority students who want a
CTE certificate or degree while still in high school or in a community
college program. Examples of the strategies used can be adapted to school
districts and community colleges around the country. The session should
benefit those interested in concrete, workable tips on community college
partnering with school districts and community agencies to further the
goals of career and technical education.

Gregson is the Director of the Division of Adult, Counselor, and Technology
Education at the University of Idaho. He has taught and published in the
area of career and technical teacher preparation. His publications have
appeared in the Journal of Vocational Education Research, Journal of Career
and Technical Education, Journal of Industrial Teacher Education, and others.

Rooney is a registered nurse with 29 years of nursing, leadership, and
management experience. She received her doctorate in vocational education
from Colorado State University in 1993, and her Master's degree in nursing
from the University of Colorado-Denver in 1975.

After working in nursing and nursing management, Rooney became a nursing
educator, and then director of a community college nursing program, until
joining the state community college system in 1995. In her position as
Health Programs Manager and Southern Regional Director for the Colorado
Community College System, she was instrumental in writing a $1.6 million
dollar grant to the U.S. Department. of Labor and HealthOne to educate
registered nurses in an accelerated format. She developed articulation
agreements with secondary schools, postsecondary institutions and 4-year
colleges and universities. Rooney designed professional development
activities for faculty statewide. For Nursing, allied health, fire science,
and criminal justice, she assisted in the development of common core
curricula and provided technical support and guidance at the secondary and
postsecondary levels.

In her current role as the Dean of the Center for Learning Outreach at the
Community College of Denver, Rooney supervises the four branch campuses
located throughout the Denver metro area. She oversees online learning,
evening/weekend college, workforce initiatives, and high school
partnerships, including early colleges. Rooney encourages collaboration and
communication between secondary and postsecondary educators, reaches out to
the community to create workforce partnerships, and assists in the
development of early colleges with the Denver Public Schools.
