FYI For Immediate Release Michael W. Horrigan, Assistant Commissioner, Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U. S. Department of Labor, will discuss Tomorrow's Jobs: BLS Industry and Occupational Projections, 2002-2012 during a Webcast from the National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education, The Ohio State University, 3:00 p.m. ET, June 24, 2004. You can view the webcast from any computer with Internet access at http://www.nccte.org/webcasts/description.asp?wc=117. If you cannot view the webcast live, you can view the archived webcast on the National Dissemination Center for Career and Technical Education Website at www.nccte.org. Michael Horrigan will suggest that one of the great constants of the U.S. economy is change. The aging of the baby boom cohort, rapid increases in productivity through the use of technology in the workplace, changes in the organization and location of work, global competition, and continual shifts in the demand for goods and services are reshaping the types of skills that employers are demanding of workers. These changes, especially the prospect of large scale retirements of the baby boomers, serve to highlight current concerns over whether or not there is-or will be--a growing gap between the demand for and the supply of skilled workers. Mr. Horrigan will present the results of the 2002-2012 industry and occupational employment projections recently released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. He will focus on the education and training requirements that are associated with high-demand occupations. Additionally, he will address the potential impact on occupational employment of changing demographics, productivity trends, industry output and employment trends, and global competition.
