NEWS: WEINER URGES CITY TO BUILD BROAD CHANNEL FIREHOUSE

New York City – Representative Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn and Queens) recently urged the Department of Transportation to cut the bureaucratic red tape that is preventing a new firehouse from being built in Broad Channel.

For months, the DOT, which has the final sign-off, has blocked the approval. In 2005, Rep. Anthony Weiner and Sen. Clinton helped secure $2 million in federal transportation money to construct a new firehouse on Cross Bay Boulevard.

In a letter to Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, Rep. Weiner wrote, “The plans are drafted. The money is waiting. Only you can cut the last piece of red tape. I encourage you to do so at once.”

Ms. Janette Sadik-Khan Commissioner NYC Department of Transportation 40 Worth Street New York, NY 10013

Dear Commissioner Sadik-Khan:

Broad Channel Fire Department is a terrific organization that serves a lifesaving function: providing emergency response to an isolated part of our city.

So when Senator Clinton and I were approached to help the vollies of Broad Channel build a new firehouse, we fought hard to win them $2 million in the 2005 Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act, PL 109-59.

Now the only obstacle to these federal dollars coming to New York City is a sign-off by the Department of Transportation.

The plans are drafted. The money is waiting. Only you can cut the last piece of red tape. I encourage you to do so at once.

Sincerely,

ANTHONY D. WEINER Member of Congress
