Moore celebrates 25th anniversary of NCADV

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District – Kansas) today joined colleagues and national groups combating domestic violence to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

“Domestic violence is an intolerable abuse suffered by America’s women and children. In my years as Johnson County District Attorney, I discovered violence against women to be a widespread problem hurting Kansas families and worked to end it. I am honored to join fellow members of Congress and women’s groups in celebrating 25 years of hard work fighting domestic violence,” Moore said at a news conference briefing this morning.

NCADV is celebrating its 25th anniversary in conjunction with Lifetime Television and singer/songwriter Michael Bolton. The group hosted its 5th annual National Lobby Day yesterday and is focusing on a new campaign to engage men in the movement to end violence against women.

Moore has built a reputation for fighting domestic violence during his years of public service. After serving as District Attorney, Moore helped found Safehome, a shelter for abused women and children in Kansas City. The facility provides a 10-week shelter program for women, a special children's program at the shelter, and outreach counseling services for women and children. In 2001, 210 women and 174 children were sheltered; 1,515 calls were received on the 24-hour hotline; and 288 clients spent 3,979 hours in counseling through outreach services.

“Safehome continues its outstanding work to provide a stable environment for battered women and children. The services they provide truly make a difference for the Kansas City metro area community,” Moore said.

The news conference included Representatives Shelley Moore Capito (WV-02) and Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), in addition to Michael Bolton.
