Moore announces funding for flood control projects in Kansas

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) –Congressman Dennis Moore (Third District – Kansas) today announced that Congress will soon give final approval for federal funding for several energy and water projects that will improve the quality of life for Kansans.

“This federal funding will help us protect the lives and property of Kansans when severe weather strikes,” Moore said. “It represents a continued commitment by Congress to improve Kansas’ readiness for flooding and will relieve some of the fiscal pressures currently burdening our state and local governments.”

The projects are included in the Energy and Water Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 2004 which was just approved by conference committee and is expected to be signed into law in the coming weeks.

“This year’s bill provides funding for the Turkey Creek project under the ‘Construction, general’ category, which means that we can finally begin construction on this much-needed project,” Moore said. “Flood control and prevention programs are vital for the safety and security of all Kansans. I will continue to work to secure funding for these and other projects.”

The Kansas projects Moore secured federal funds for include:

Turkey Creek basin flood control project in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo.: bill earmarks $500,000 in funding to begin construction.

Study of Brush Creek basin flood control needs in Johnson County, Kan., and Jackson County, Mo.: bill earmarks $100,000 in investigations funding.

Continuation of feasibility phase of Upper Turkey Creek basin flood control study primarily in Johnson County, Kan.: bill earmarks $229,000 in investigations funding.

Continuation of feasibility study of flood control project in the levee system in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo., on the Kansas and Missouri Rivers: bill earmarks $500,000 in investigations funding.
