Federal regulations
require a methodical process for selecting
the damaging events for further analyses
in disruptive event scenarios.
The first step of this process involved identifying
events that could possibly affect the repository's ability
to isolate the waste (e.g. erosion, volcanism, meteorites,
nuclear criticality, water table rise, etc.). Next,
we estimated the probability of these events occurring
in the future.
According to the regulations, if scientists concluded
that a condition or event had a probability of greater
than 1 chance in 100,000,000 of occurring in a year,
they then considered the radiological consequences of
the event.
Consistent with the regulations, if the event (such
as soil erosion) did not result in a radiological release,
it was excluded from further consideration.
After our probability and consequence analyses, the
events that remained were volcanism and earthquakes.
These events were then analyzed in disruptive event
scenarios.
