NY Reps Urge Attorney General to Honor 9/11 Paramedics With Benefits
WASHINGTON, DC – A group of New York Members of Congress is urging the U.S. Attorney General to honor five 9/11 paramedics with benefits under the Public Safety Officer’s Benefits Program (letter to Gonzales). Reps. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), Vito Fossella (R-NY), Anthony Weiner (D-NY) and Peter King (R-NY) have written to Attorney General Alberto Gonzales about the paramedics, who include David Sullins, Marvin Bethea, James Dobson, Michael Roberts and Bonnie Giebfried.

All five responded to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. David Sullins died responding to the attacks.  Marvin Bethea, James Dobson, Michael Roberts and Bonnie Giebfried are now permanently disabled as a direct result of their work in response to 9/11.

The Public Safety Officer’s Benefits Program provides death and disability benefits for public safety officers who have been killed or permanently disabled by a catastrophic personal injury in the line of duty (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/BJA/grant/psob/psob_main.html).

“These heroes were there for us when we needed them, and we should be there for them now in their times of need,” said Maloney. “They are more than qualified to receive these benefits, and I hope the Attorney General will review their cases and make the right decision.”
