WASHINGTON – Last night, Congressman Kevin McCarthy was unanimously elected to fill a vacancy on the House Committee on Homeland Security. The vacancy on the Committee arose after Committee assignments were reassigned following the death of Georgia Congressman Charlie Norwood. The assignment may be temporary; when a new Member is elected to serve the rest of Congressman Norwood’s term, that member will likely receive McCarthy’s assignment on Homeland Security.
“Being entrusted by my colleagues to serve on the House Committee on Homeland Security is an honor,” said McCarthy. “Even though this Committee assignment will likely last only for the next several months, I see this assignment as an opportunity to be a hardworking member of the Committee to ensure our national security is strong and protect our homeland from terrorist threats.”
The House of Representatives created the Committee on Homeland Security in 2002 to oversee the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. In 2005, the House of Representatives granted the Committee on Homeland Security permanent status. Currently, the Committee is composed of 19 Democrats and 15 Republicans.
With this appointment, Congressman McCarthy now serves on the House Republican Steering Committee, the House Committee on Agriculture, the Committee on House Administration, and the House Committee on Homeland Security.
