MALONEY STATEMENT ON NOMINATION OF NEW CENSUS DIRECTOR
REP. CALLS ON KINCANNON TO BREAK FROM PREDECESSOR, RELEASE COMPLETE 2000 DATA TO CONGRESS
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- After learning that the Bush Administration has nominated Lou Kincannon to become the next Director of the Census Bureau, Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement:

"It is my hope that, if approved, Mr. Kincannon will be brave enough to put an end to the politicization of the Census Bureau that has occurred under President Bush's watch," Rep. Maloney said today. "Over the past several months, the Census Bureau has refused to release to Congress the complete Census 2000 data - data that would shed light on how 6.5 million Americans were left out of the Census. Under President Bush's leadership, the Census Bureau has turned into the Censor Bureau. I hope that Mr. Kincannon will take this post with an open mind and a willingness to let statistical experts do their jobs, without political interference."

Attached, please find a letter being sent today by Census Subcommittee Ranking Member Wm. Lacy Clay (D-MO) and Congresswoman Maloney to outgoing Acting Census Bureau Director William Barron.
