STATEMENT BY CONGRESSWOMAN CAROLYN MALONEY ON THE ANNOUNCEMENT BY SECRETARY ALBRIGHT TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR INTERNATIONAL FAMILY PLANNING |
NEW YORK -- Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) released the following statement today, after Secretary of State Madeline Albright's remarks on international family planning at the State Department press briefing:
"I was extremely pleased to hear Secretary Albright announce that the Administration will be requesting $541.6 million -- 1995 levels -- in funding for international family planning in the next budget. "90% of women living on our world live on less than a dollar a day. These same women often desperately need education about family planning in their communities. As our world population toppled past six billion this year, young women across the world need information more than ever about safe motherhood. "The United States now can and should stand strong as a global leader on family planning and reproductive rights advocacy. Again, I am very gratified that Secretary Albright proudly recognized the commitment of this country to supporting international family planning and a woman's right to choose." ### |
